He was like a long stick stuck in a L shaped pipe with the downward end closed off. But he went in head first, facing down, and in that position the only way for his legs to bend into the ground level part of the hole was to bend them the wrong way. If he had went in head first but facing up, his legs would have been positioned so that when they pulled him out, he could just bend them into the ground level part of the tunnel before they hit the ceiling. He was essentially stuck in a stick position and they could only pull him out in that position. But once he was wedged farther down the hole, the shape of the hole just made it so he couldn’t move his body in any way really. Because of the shape of the hole, he was able to slide in easily since he could bend his legs and waist in the larger part of the hole as he went into the downward part. When they were pulling him up, his legs would hit the ceiling of the cave and they realized the only way they could pull him out was to basically break his legs or hyperextend his knees.
